Clarence Seward Darrow, prominent Chicago trial lawyer, was born in Kinsman, Ohio on April 18, 1857. He attended Allegheny College, after which he studied one year at the University of Michigan Law School. He then worked as a lawyer in Youngstown, and was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1878. Germer, a native of Germany, immigrated to Illinois as a youth, where he became a miner and United Mine Workers organizer. He was the National Executive Secretary of the Socialist Party of America (1916-1919). He was also an organizer for the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO).
